The Faculty of Medicine of the Université de Montréal can be traced back to a school first established in Montréal in 1943 and incorporated in 1845 under the name of Ecole de Medecine et de Chirurgie de Montréal . In 1891 the school merged with the Faculty of Medicine of the Montréal Branch of Laval University, which had been founded in 1877. In 1920, by an act of the Quebec legislature, the Montréal branch of Laval University was granted its independence, and the school of medicine became known by its present name. All instruction is in French, and clinical instruction is carried out at 14 affiliated teaching hospitals and research centers.
